Stage 2: 磋 Sa (Scrape)— Week 1 of 3: Reshaping the Core
Theme: Stage 2: Grinding Down the Imperfections
Are you polishing for show, or are you polishing for strength? We all want the final “shine” of a masterful technique or a polished character, but are we willing to endure the “scrape” of the foundational core?
磋 Sa (Scrape): This is the stage where the raw, cut stone is ground against a harder surface to remove major imperfections. This isn’t a delicate process; it’s a powerful, repetitive grind. It’s not about being nice to the stone; it’s about being effective.
The Power of Kihon (Basics)
In the dojo, Sa is our Kihon (basics). It is “the repetitive” work on fundamental techniques. It’s not flashy, and it’s often tiring. But if you want a punch, a kick, or a block that truly “shines” in its power and precision, you must scrape away the weakness, laziness, and bad habits in your foundation. A master isn’t the one who does a complex technique best; they are the one who does the basics best, 10,000 times. Every perfect repetition of a stance or chamber is a powerful scrape, redefining the core of who you are as a martial artist.
Your Internal Core
This philosophy applies directly to your character. Just as a strong basic stance supports a powerful technique, a strong core of daily discipline supports a powerful life. If you want to refine your leadership, focus, or perseverance, you must be willing to engage in the repetitive, often unglamorous, “Sa” of your daily habits.
The “Friction” Connection
Your training partner is your sharpening stone. When they push you in a drill or present a solid defense, they are helping you Sa away your defensive errors, your lazy focus, and your weak spirit. Don’t avoid the challenge; embrace the friction. Let’s make every basic count.
The Weekly Challenge: “The Core Commitment”
Building on last block’s work of identifying our rough edges, we are now moving to active reshaping. This week, pick one basic habit in the dojo and one foundational action at home to execute with flawless intention:
- Dojo Focus: Pick one simple foundational technique (e.g., your perfect starting stance, your chamber for a punch, or your defensive guard). Execute it with full, perfect form every single time you move. NO exceptions.
- Home/Work Focus: Identify one small foundational action (e.g., making your bed perfectly, completing one key task before relaxing, or tidying your space completely before starting something new). Do it excellently, without hesitation, every single time.
Rise Together. Sharpen Each Other.
